Search begins for 25th NSW emerging visual artist

The NSW Government is calling for visual artists at the start of their careers to apply for the Create NSW and Artspace 2021 NSW Visual Arts Fellowship (Emerging).

The 2021 fellowship program is seeking up to eight artists who will be selected to receive curatorial support and mentorship from Artspace as they develop new works for an exhibition. From the eight artists a finalist will be awarded $30,000 from the NSW Government to progress a self-directed program of professional development.

Minister for the Arts Don Harwin said the

fellowship, now in its 25th year, was a career defining opportunity for NSW’s emerging visual artists.

“For 25 years the NSW Visual Arts Fellowship (Emerging) has been a platform for generating talent and interest in NSW’s visual arts community, and I’m pleased to welcome this year’s applications.

In 2021, the National Art School will deliver the Visual Arts Emerging Fellowship exhibition component as Artspace undertakes a redevelopment program of its Gunnery building in 2021 with $5 million support by the NSW Government.

“It is exciting to see Artspace and the National Art School join forces to deliver the Visual Arts Emerging Fellowship exhibition in 2021. This partnership will provide clear opportunities for NSW artists and curatorial staff from Artspace and the National Art School to develop their skills and knowledge,” said Mr Harwin.

Previous recipients of the Fellowship include Shivanjani Lal, Ramesh Mario Nithiyendran, Soda Jerk, Jamie North, Consuelo Cavaniglia, Heath Franco and 2020 Fellow Kamilaroi/Gamilaraay artist Dennis Golding, is currently using his Fellowship to develop his professional practice through research to establish new narratives of contemporary Aboriginal cultural identity in urban space.

Applications for the 2021 fellowship open Friday 26 February and close 5pm Wednesday 24 March 2021. Find out more information including details on how to apply on the Create NSW website
