Greater South East Irrigation Scheme water sales launched

21 February 2025

Jane Howlett, Minister for Primary Industries and Water

The Tasmanian Government has joined with Tasmanian Irrigation for the launch of the second round of water sales for the Greater South East Irrigation Scheme.

Minister for Primary Industries and

Water, Jane Howlett, said water sales for the $301 million scheme will provide long-term water security for the agricultural sector.

“The Greater South East is traditionally one of the driest areas of the State and reliable water supplies here will be a game changer for agriculture,” Minister Howlett said.

“Growing our supply of reliable, affordable agricultural water through irrigation schemes like this means Tasmanian farmers can produce more food and fibre for domestic and export markets

“This week's water sales launch marks another milestone in a project that the Tasmanian Government has been advocating for for a long time.

“It will deliver more than 30,000ML of new water, which will give producers the confidence to diversify their farming practices.

“Our Government, through our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future, will continue to invest and support our farmers and producers to create valuable jobs and grow the agriculture sector.”

The Tasmanian Government is delivering $75 million towards the total cost of the project, with a planned completion of 2030.
