Rugby, Tennis and Hockey Athletes Selected to Australian Olympic Team

The Australian Olympic Committee has announced three athletes to the Australian Olympic Team for Tokyo.

Max Purcell (Tennis), Nathan Lawson (Rugby 7s) and Georgia Wilson (Hockey) will make their Olympic debuts following Alex de Minaur’s withdrawal and injury withdrawals of Henry

Paterson and Penny Squibb.

Purcell, who made the Australian Open doubles final in 2020, will contest the doubles competition in Tokyo with John Peers.

West Australian Georgia Wilson, who was ruled out of the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games with a serious knee injury, will join the Hockeyroos squad in Tokyo, while Nathan Lawson will cap a remarkable rise, with the 22-year-old to make his Australian sevens debut at the world’s biggest sporting stage.

With today’s team selection replacements, the Team stands at 487 athletes, with 260 women and 227 men.

Chef de Mission for the Australian Olympic Team for Tokyo Ian Chesterman welcomed the three athletes to the Team.

“Congratulations to Max, Nathan and Georgia on making their Australian Olympic debuts,” Mr Chesterman said.

“Injuries and withdrawals so close to a Games are unfortunate and our thoughts are with Alex, Henry and Penny. But this has now provided an opportunity for Max, Nathan and Georgia, an opportunity I am sure they will make the most of.

“These athletes have been working on their craft over a long period and I’m sure they will do their teammates, family, supporters, coaches and the Australian Olympic Team proud in Tokyo.”
