Have your say on Tasmania’s first volunteering strategy

10 February 2025

Roger Jaensch, Minister for Community Services

Tasmanians can now have their say on shaping the future of volunteering in our state through the development of Tasmania’s first volunteering strategy.

Minister for Community Services, Roger Jaensch, said Tasmanian

volunteers make an incredible contribution to our communities every day.

“More than two-thirds of Tasmanians are volunteers, with the total value of volunteer hours estimated to be around $4 billion every year," Minister Jaensch said.

“This strategy celebrates the wonderful contribution our volunteers make to the Tasmanian community and will ensure the sustainability of the volunteering sector. It will also provide a clear plan to support and grow volunteering in our state.”

The 2023 State of Volunteering Report found:
*    332,100 Tasmanians (69.8 per cent) gave their time to volunteer activities during 2023;
*    The average hours volunteered per volunteer was 22.4 hours per month;
*    Tasmanians volunteered an impressive 89.4 million hours of their time in 2023; and
*    54.2 per cent of community members attribute the wellbeing of their community to volunteers.

“This Strategy is being developed in conjunction with Volunteering Tasmania, as part of our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future, which focuses on developing stronger communities,” Minister Jaensch said.

Volunteer organisations, volunteers, local government, business and peak bodies are encouraged to have their say, with consultation now underway.

Forums are scheduled for February 25 in Ulverstone, Launceston on the 27th and Hobart on March 4th. There will also be an online forum on March 6th.
