Australia's weather outlook for Boxing Day released following Perth's hottest Christmas Day

Western Australia continues to swelter under record-breaking heatwave conditions while strong winds and heavy rain continue in the Northern Territory, following the cancellation of a cyclone watch. The Bureau of Meteorology’s Boxing Day forecast also shows storms for northern and eastern parts of the country.

Meteorologist Jonathan How said Australians should be aware of weather conditions across the country with several major outdoor events set to take place today.

"Sydney can expect milder conditions with possible showers and

thunderstorms and a high of 27⁰C.

"Those participating in the Sydney to Hobart yacht race will see strong southerly headwinds and isolated storms today.

"Melbourne is hosting the Boxing Day Test and can expect cloudy, cool and windy conditions with a high of 19⁰C.

"In the Northern Territory, while the cyclone watch has been cancelled, monsoonal rainfall and storms will continue to impact the Top End in the coming days. Darwin will see squally monsoonal showers and thunderstorms, and be cooler under thick cloud with a maximum temperature of 27⁰C.

"The tropical low is forecast to track east into the Gulf of Carpentaria and towards Cape York Peninsula and southeast towards the east coast of Queensland later next week. The low is likely to bring heavy rainfall and the risk of flooding to that state. Southeast Queensland will see unsettled and stormy conditions on Boxing Day with the temperature expected to rise to 28⁰C in Brisbane.

"Western Australia saw history-making temperatures on Christmas Day with Perth reaching a high of 42.8⁰C, while Geraldton was the hottest place in Australia, reaching 47.3⁰C. Overnight temperatures will remain high and uncomfortable, bringing no respite from the heat of the day and increased fire danger.

"The nation's capital can expect severe storms around Canberra and inland NSW.

"Meanwhile, ahead of the arrival of yachts into Hobart, Tasmania is expecting south-westerly winds, and a top temperature of 27⁰C."
