Pormpuraaw Police Station officially opens

Minister for Police and Corrective Services and Minister for Fire and Emergency Services, the Honourable Mark Ryan MP and Commissioner Katarina Carroll today officially opened the new Pormpuraaw Police Station.

The State’s newest police station will service the community of Pormpuraaw, a remote coastal community on the western coast of Cape York Peninsula, situated 500km south of the northern tip of Australia.

The station will service an area from the Coleman River in the south to

the Kendall River in the north, bordering with the Gulf of Carpentaria coastline to the east and Coen divisional boundary to the west.

Commissioner Carroll said Pormpuraaw Station would extend policing capability in the Cape, with the addition of four sworn officers, a Police Liaison Officer (PLO) and two vehicles.

“This police station will bring a policing presence to the residents of Pormpuraaw and will provide officers the resources and equipment needed to deliver efficient policing in the area,” Commissioner Carroll said.

“With the appointment of a PLO in this District, we are committed to further building trusted relationships between the community and police.”

Minister Ryan said the new station was conveniently located, supporting good community access for residents to discuss home and personal security and safety as well as broader policing topics.

“The Queensland Government is supporting the Queensland Police Service with record budget funding to ensure officers are equipped with the facilities and resources necessary to support communities in every part of our beautiful state,” Minister Ryan said.

“Residents of Pormpuraaw can look forward to the support local police will provide.”
