In recognition of International Day of People with Disability on 3 December 2021, we were planning on having a drop-in at the Hamra Centre Library, however due to changes to COVID-19 regulations, we're postponing this event for another time.
It's timely though to recognise this important event as we've recently released our latest Disability Access and Inclusion Plan (DAIP).
Access and Inclusion Officer Jamie Scroop says that often people don't know how councils provide support for people of all abilities.
"Councils play a pivotal role in providing services for all our community,
including those who may have different access and inclusion needs," Jamie says."We also serve to connect our community with organisations and services that we may not provide; in essence being a link provider."
International Day of People with Disability has been held on 3 December across the world for many years as a way to celebrate the contributions and achievements of people with disability and to promote awareness, understanding and acceptance in communities.
"We all have a role to play in ensuring everyone has the chance to reach their full potential and participate in all aspects of community life," Jamie says.
"Our latest DAIP focuses on inclusive and accessible communities, leadership and collaboration and learning and employment. We're hoping that International Day of Persons with Disability will help highlight some of the plans that we have for the future, as well as the services we're already providing."
