Supporting and celebrating the future of Tasmania’s dairy industry

The future of Tasmania’s dairy sector has been bolstered thanks to an industry-specific development program designed to encourage and support the next generation of dairy farm managers.

The Tasmanian Farm Manager/2IC Dairy

Program, run by Dairy Tasmania with support from the Tasmanian Government, offers modules on a range of topics from financial fundamentals to people management principles, over a four-week period.

The program is a key part of our Government’s $900 000 commitment to our dairy industry.

The continued success and growth of Tasmania’s dairy sector means there is an increasing need in Tasmania for experienced farm managers and individuals who can be second in command (or 2IC), on a dairy farm.

Last year, DairyTas established a specific training course to prepare individuals for these roles. The program was a success, and this is the second year the course has been offered.

Our Government is proud to be playing a part in future-proofing our vital dairy sector, which was worth $458 million in 2018-19 and is on track to break its all-time milk production record again this year.

The 46 Tasmanians completing the 2021 program join the 26 participants from last year’s inaugural course who are now ready to take the next steps in their careers, which will benefit the industry more widely.

The Tasmanian dairy industry is a significant part of our agricultural sector and is a key part of our target to increase agricultural production to $10 billion by 2050.
