Health promotion foundation VicHealth has welcomed the final report of the Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health System. VicHealth applauds the leadership of courageous Victorians with lived experience whose contribution resulted in crucial recommendations to help rebuild Victoria’s mental health system.
VicHealth strongly supports the Royal Commission’s inclusion of a focus on preventing mental health conditions before they occur, and the importance of promoting positive mental wellbeing for the whole community.
In recommending the creation of new
leadership and resources as well as dedicated funding for this work, the Royal Commission has provided the basis for Victoria to build on its existing leadership in promoting mental wellbeing.VicHealth is committed to working alongside people with lived experience and a wide range of Victorian communities to prevent the incidence and intensity of mental ill health, and create a Victoria in which everyone has the potential to lead fulfilling and flourishing lives.
VicHealth CEO, Dr Sandro Demaio, welcomed the priority actions that will be implemented in places where people live, work and learn.
“This final report signifies a new way forward in the way we view mental health and wellbeing. It addresses the reform needed in mental health settings while extending out to our homes, schools, workplaces, and communities. It recognises the many opportunities that exist to foster social connection and a sense of belonging, which are crucial in supporting the mental wellbeing of all Victorians,” Dr Demaio said.
"One of VicHealth’s core priorities is supporting the mental wellbeing of Victorians, particularly young people. We see opportunities in working with local arts organisations, sports clubs and other community groups in empowering communities to support mental wellbeing. This report reaffirms the importance of this work, and we look forward to working closely with the Victorian Government to help implement this reform.”
Dr Demaio commended the Commission for amplifying the stories and voices of people with lived experience of mental illness or psychological distress, and their families, carers and supporters.
“I applaud the courage shown by people who shared their experiences, often of trauma and stress, throughout the Royal Commission. The amplification of their voices through this report allowed for a holistic picture to be painted of the mental health system and shone a spotlight on areas that require reform. It provides a standard for all agencies that work in the mental wellbeing space to live up to,” Dr Demaio said.
